One Year, One Step at a Time

Another thing I love is running. Other than for reasons of injury or days of laziness (and, once, cultural/safety considerations when I was in Kashmir), I had never seriously considered that anything could prevent one from running. Because of this, I find this NYT article entitled Barriers Fell, One Year, One Step at a Time rather fascinating. Of course, there has always been some sort of gender-based discrimination, but I simply never thought that the times of women being discouraged or even not allowed to exercise (yes, you read that correctly) are still part of a more ‘recent’ past (the 1970s) and not long-gone. I would have expected this to be an issue more than half a century ago, prior to the 50s perhaps. It means that my own mother could not have done what I do nearly every day now: go for a run.
Intriguing quote from a pioneering female runner out in the streets in the 70s:
“If I went out to run and it rained, the police would stop me,” she said. “They thought I was running away from something.”
